Lateral View of the orbit in X-ray imaging is used to evaluate the bony structure and soft tissues of the eye socket (orbit) from the side. In this view, the patient’s head is positioned so that the affected side of the face is closest to the image receptor, and the X-ray beam passes horizontally from the opposite side. This projection provides a clear profile of the orbital rims, orbital roof and floor, optic canal, and adjacent facial bones. It is particularly useful for detecting orbital fractures, foreign bodies, tumors, or infections. The lateral view helps assess the posterior portion of the orbit, which includes the optic nerve pathway, and is often used in trauma cases to determine the extent of injury, especially in blowout fractures of the orbital floor or displacement of bone fragments. It is also essential in evaluating proptosis (bulging of the eye) or retro-orbital masses, providing valuable information for both radiologists and ophthalmologists.
