The Lateral View of the Foot is a standard radiographic projection that provides a side profile of the entire foot, including the calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuboid, cuneiforms, and the metatarsals. In this view, the patient is positioned either lying on their side or standing, with the lateral side of the foot placed against the image receptor and the foot dorsiflexed to form a 90° angle with the leg. The X-ray beam is directed medial to lateral, centered at the base of the third metatarsal.
This view is particularly useful for evaluating foot alignment, longitudinal arch, calcaneal fractures, midfoot injuries, and joint effusion, especially in trauma or post-surgical cases. It complements the AP and oblique views for a comprehensive assessment of foot pathology.
