The Anterior Oblique View (RAO/LAO) is an X-ray projection where the patient is rotated so that the front of the body faces the image receptor at an angle, typically around 45°, either to the right (Right Anterior Oblique, RAO) or left (Left Anterior Oblique, LAO). This positioning provides an oblique perspective of the targeted area, commonly used for evaluating the sternum or sternoclavicular joints.

For the sternum, the RAO position is most commonly used; the patient stands or sits rotated 15° to 20° toward the right anterior oblique position. The X-ray beam is directed perpendicular to the sternum, allowing the sternum to be projected away from the spine, reducing superimposition of the vertebral column and ribs. This gives a clearer, more detailed image of the sternal body, helping to detect fractures, lesions, or deformities that may be obscured on the standard PA or lateral views. The anterior oblique view is especially valuable in trauma and diagnostic evaluations of sternal pathology.
