The Weight-Bearing Lateral View of the Foot is a specialized radiographic projection taken with the patient standing upright, placing full weight on the foot being examined. The lateral side of the foot is positioned against the image receptor, and the X-ray beam is directed horizontally from medial to lateral, centered at the base of the third metatarsal.
This view provides a true side profile of the foot under natural load, allowing detailed evaluation of the longitudinal arch, hindfoot alignment, and the relationship between the calcaneus, talus, and metatarsals. It is especially useful in diagnosing conditions like flatfoot (pes planus), cavus foot, midfoot collapse, and subtle dislocations that may not be visible when the foot is not bearing weight. This view plays a crucial role in pre-surgical planning and assessing outcomes of foot deformity corrections.
