The Skyline View, also known as the Tangential View, is a specialized radiographic projection primarily used to visualize the patellofemoral joint and the articular surfaces of the patella and femoral trochlea. In this view, the patient is typically positioned supine or seated with the knee flexed at an angle (commonly 45° to 90°), depending on the technique used. The X-ray beam is directed tangentially to the patella, typically from inferior to superior, to provide a clear image of the joint space and patellar alignment. This view is particularly valuable for detecting patellar subluxation or dislocation, chondromalacia patellae, patellar fractures, and degenerative changes in the patellofemoral joint. It is often used in both trauma and orthopedic evaluations of anterior knee pain.
