The Mortise View is a specialized radiographic projection of the ankle joint designed to clearly visualize the ankle mortise, which is the space formed by the distal tibia, fibula, and talus. In this view, the patient lies supine or seated with the leg extended, and the entire leg is internally rotated about 15 to 20 degrees so that the intermalleolar line is parallel to the image receptor. The foot remains dorsiflexed to maintain a 90° angle with the leg.

The X-ray beam is directed anteroposteriorly, centered midway between the medial and lateral malleoli. This positioning removes the overlap of the distal fibula over the talus seen in a standard AP view, providing a clear image of the tibiotalar joint space and the syndesmosis.

The Mortise View is especially valuable in detecting ankle fractures, ligament injuries, joint space narrowing, and early signs of arthritis. It is commonly used in trauma settings and is an essential component of a complete ankle radiographic series.
